DAY 59 - 63 (Atherton Tablelands)

DAY 63 - Sat 21 Aug
  • Yes, it was another dark day for the credit card in Cairns - time to leave I think! Hopefully now we have everything we should need :)
  • Tomorrow we are heading into the Daintree Rainforest to camp at Noah beach for a week (we are stopping at Generations Church along the way which we went to last time we were up this way)... Noah beach is a national park which means no power, water and probably no phone/internet service. It will be a good test for the van and Im a little nervous about all the little creepy crawlies that come with camping in a rainforest. Hopefully it will be a more relaxing week with some good fishing, perhaps reading a book or two..

DAY 62 - Fri 20 Aug
  • We left Henrietta Creek and made our way back to Cairns... a photo along the way...
  • We arrived in Cairns about lunch time and went into town to buy a few things after checking into a nice caravan park that really is more like a resort. Later that night we went for a stroll around the resort and came across a man hanging onto the tail of a large python right in the middle of the resort! He was waiting for a snake catcher to come and take it away...

DAY 61 - Thurs 19 Aug
  • Our campsite...
  • We said goodbye this morning to Ryan and Mel as they made their way back south. It was really great to see them and spend a couple days catching up... just like old times. Bit sad to see them go!
  • For the first time in 61 days we looked at a map wondering which direction we should head... we finally decided to go back north into the Daintree area and chill there for a couple of weeks and relax a little (if we can!).
Above is the view from our caravan windows...
  • So after spending a lazy morning in our rainforest retreat listening to the rain on the van roof and looking at maps we decided to don our raincoats and go for a stroll. 6kms, 3 hours and 37 leeches later we arrived back at the van! It was not the stroll we were after as we stupidly didn't read the sign that said the rainforest circuit was a 6km hike through rugged rainforest. We took no water (and it was HUMID) and Geoff was wearing his thongs! I picked 14 leeches off my shoes and socks and geoff picked 23 off his thongs and feet... Although it was tiring, it was a beautiful walk...

DAY 60 - Weds 18 Aug
  • We all left Tinaroo Dam and slowly made our way to Henrietta Creek in the Wooroonooran National Park. Along the way we stopped at some of the local attractions...
  • Curtain Fig Tree...
  • Morning tea stop at Lake Eacham. Here we learnt that Cassowary's are actually dangerous and can cause death. We had NO idea and probably would have chased after one trying to get a photo!  They are like an emu but have a blue head with a horn, are slightly smaller and have chunky legs. Thanks to the "Be Casso-Wary" sign, we now know not to chase after them! We haven't seen one yet... maybe we will upload a photo one day if we ever encounter one.
  • Once again, it was beautiful countryside...
  • Along the way, Geoff declared that he has now decided he wants to be a Gold Miner... have NO idea why as we haven't even been to a gold mine! I think he has gold rush fever.

  • Every where we stop and camp there seems to be "bush" turkeys! (that's what we've been calling them but apparently they are "brush" turkeys...
  • Geoff (aka Bear Grylls), Ryan and Max desperately tried to get a camp fire going... We were camping in the middle of a rainforest so everything was so damp... they eventually gave up.
  • While we were sitting around the fire 'that didn't go', a random animal walked right through our camp totally oblivious to us watching it. At first we thought it was a possum, then Geoff named it as a bilby... later research revealed it was a bandicoot. (A rat also ran through camp - Mel didn't like that one!).

DAY 59 - Tues 17 Aug
  • We packed up at Lake Placid (after spending quite some time cleaning all the bat poop off our van and awning) and headed west towards Mareeba to meet up with Ryan and Mel.
  • Along the way we stopped at Kuranda - which I'm sure is the souvenir capital of Australia. Photo below is Geoff and me just chilling in Kuranda...

  • We met up with Ryan and Mel and their 2 year old son Max, and travelled with them to Tinaroo Dam in the Atherton Tablelands. Not long after we arrived, we all went for a bike ride around the dam...
  • We then had a play on the jumping pillow with max at the caravan park...
