DAY 77-78 (Cooktown)

DAY 78 - Sun 5 Sept

  • Spring seems to have brought hotter days and much higher humidity. We feel sticky all the time - even 10 mins after a shower! We have been using the van air-con for the first time. Only problem is, it's quite noisy and my dear ol' hubby cant hear a word I say... most annoying.
  • Cooktown A.O.G. Church warmly welcomed us and it was a great service. Afterwards we met a couple, Geoff and Poss Weingarth, who knew Kerry Medway (our Port Mac pastor) and through further chatting discovered they also knew Geoff's dad and had even preached in his Church! What a small world!
  • After lunch Geoff checked out the Captain Cook Museum (whilst I had a rest). He says he now has a greater respect for Aboriginal people. He was also amazed to see the original anchor used by Captain Cook that was discovered 200 years later covered in coral...
  • Geoff wants me to mention also that it was in Cooktown that Captain Cook, Joseph Banks and their crew first saw a kangaroo and named it. Their original description of them (from their journal) was that they looked like a greyhound! He must have been smoking something special that day.
  • Once again, our plans have changed! We originally planned to camp at Elim Beach with the van for a week. After talking to some locals, we are not confident in taking the van on the unsealed road. So instead, we have decided to do our 4WD camping trip first. That way we can check out the road aswell. Tomorrow we are leaving the caravan with Geoff and Poss (who we met at church) and making our way to Bathurst Bay (will take 3-4 days to get there). The road is going to be difficult and remote and we wont be able to shower at all (unless we find a croc free creek!). We are not sure for how long we will be gone, probably when we run out of food and water (week - 10 days). Geoff is super excited and I am a little nervous but also excited especially about the fishing!

DAY 77 - Sat 4 Sept

  • As we were leaving the caravan park in Cairns, Geoff decided he wanted to pump up the car tyres. Praise God because when we got out of the car to do this, we noticed we had left the front window awning open! No doubt this would have broken off in the wind when travelling if we had not noticed.
  • Along the way to Elim Beach (as planned) we both decided we wanted to spend the night in Cooktown and try find a church in the morning. We checked into a caravan park (after checking a few others out) and I asked the lady about check-out times as we wanted to go to Church in the morning. She said she goes to an A.O.G. Church across the road if we wanted to go. There were no signs for the church as it was in an old hall - we would not have found it! Once again, we praise God for leading us to this lady and helping us find a church for tomorrow morning. We can make our plans (like heading to Elim Beach) but it is the Lord our God who determines our steps. How blessed are we!
  • We rode our bikes down to the Cooktown Wharf and enjoyed happy hour whilst watching people fish and also chatting to some of the interesting locals.
